"We continue to disseminate to consumers associated the use of herbal and traditional medicinal products imported to beware. Consumers should also consider the composition and properties," Charles said at the workshop entitled "Herbal Medicine as a Cultural Heritage to Improve Image of Indonesia" at IPB International Convention Center ( Botanical Square), Bogor, yesterday.

According to him, herbal and traditional medicinal products imported without a permit or not registered with the content of chemicals in circulation even more than the officially licensed product. In this case, it is time the government through relevant agencies, such as the Ministry of Health and the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM), doing policing.

It is also expected to support the GP Jamu to socialize and educate consumers about herbal medicine to the community as well as traditional medicine is good. If not, it will be harmful to consumers from the health side. Moreover, consumers also can not lodge a complaint or even prosecute because of unclear origin of imported products and the manufacturer's.

"The potential sale of herbal products and traditional medicines in Indonesia could reach Rp 20 trillion per year. Do not be dominated by imported products that are not clear. So, with the policy of import restrictions or government settings, plus efforts to public education and socialization, the production of herbal medicine sales national industry could exceed the target this year which reached Rp 10 trillion, "said Charles, who is also the President Director of PT Nyonya Meneer this.

As is known, the Minister of Trade Mari E Pangestu Minister of Trade issued Regulation (Permendag) Number 23 Year 2010 regarding Import Provisions for Certain Products. A total of seven postal tariffs for products herbal / traditional medicine is included. Imports can only be done through five main ports, namely Port of Belawan-Medan, Tanjung Priok, Tanjung Emas, Semarang, Tanjung Perak in Surabaya, and Makassar Port.

Charles Saerang further explains, the traditional Indonesian herbal medicine is a drug that has been used by generations of society. Indonesia itself is a country that has a kind of medicinal plant the second largest in the world after Brazil.

The quality of medicinal plants in Indonesia would be better than other countries, such as ginger, turmeric, samiloto, and others. In general, Indonesia has a 30 000 40 000 species of medicinal plants species in the world. Which has been used for medicinal or drug is not more than 200 species.

In addition to national income has been contributed from non-oil sector through exports to some countries, like Taiwan, the Netherlands, the United States, and Hong Kong, even China, herbal medicine industry has also contributed in the field of socio-cultural. And, equally important, has opened job opportunities for millions of workers, either directly or indirectly.

Currently there are 1247 herbal industry and traditional medicine consisting of 129 large and medium scale units and 1037 small scale industries and the rest of the household. GP Jamu active members reached 800 companies.

Charles added, the sales value of herbal medicine, traditional medicine and herbal products in the world reached 53.4 billion U.S. dollars, or around Rp 500 trillion, and of them in Asia amounted to 22.6 billion U.S. dollars, or Rp 200 trillion. Ironically, the herbal industry in Malaysia, which hardly has a medicinal plant, its sales could reach 1.5 billion U.S. dollars, or Rp 14 trillion. While Indonesia has 200 medicinal plant raw materials, industry sales this year only Rp 10 trillion.

"Saintifikasi herbal medicine in health care-based research can change the paradigm and be able to lift the image of herbal medicine that can enhance public trust. However, this needs the full support of government," he said.

In fact, continued Charles, with the establishment of Agency Review of Traditional and Complementary Medicine (BKKTK) Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI) is a fresh wind that awaited by the herbal medicine industry. With more and more doctors are interested in developing and using herbal medicine in health care, then the herbal industry can flourish.

Obviously this will also encourage the cultivation of agricultural crops increased drug and is able to move the economy of society. In the end the people will support independence and reduce reliance on imported products. Therefore, GP Jamu is ready to support and facilitate the availability of medicinal products that meet the requirements saintifikasi safety, health and international quality.

"This includes the standardization of raw materials, manufacturing processes, or forms of presentation. We will also seek to improve the capacity and quality of herbal medicine industry to the national to the regions to be able to meet the needs of these herbal saintifikasi program. Previously, the Commission IX of the House of Representatives (DPR) urged the government through the ministries / institutions seriously encourage the development of herbal industry and traditional medicine. Industrial or manufacturers of herbal medicine and traditional medicine in the country will not be able to expand without any partisanship of the government.

Moreover, herbal and traditional medicinal products must compete with imported products coming into the country with ease and with a relatively cheaper price. To that end, the government should support industry development plan herbal and traditional medicine in the country.
